This journey combines highway driving, mountain roads, river valleys, ancient monasteries and the dramatic landscapes of the trans-Himalayan region of Nepal.
The Delhi to Upper Mustang roadtrip can enter Nepal through either Banbasa Border or Sunauli Border, with border crossing usually open from 6 AM to 8 PM. We plan the route to cover maximum distance on smooth Indian highways, as some roads near the Nepal border may be under construction.
Yes, it is now advisable for Indian citizens to carry a valid passport for the Delhi to Upper Mustang roadtrip. Earlier, Indians entering Nepal by road could travel with other valid ID proofs, while passports were mainly required for flights.
As per recent updates, a passport may be required for Indians entering Nepal by road as well, though strict implementation can vary at the border. We recommend carrying a valid passport to avoid any last-minute issues during border crossing, permits, and hotel check-ins.
Yes, permits are required to visit Upper Mustang, as it is a restricted region of Nepal. Travellers usually need the Restricted Area Permit for Upper Mustang (USD 50 per day per person + USD 25-30 per day as Guide charges) and other applicable conservation or trekking area permits depending on the latest regulations. Freewheel Expeditions assists participants with guidance regarding required permits and documentation for the roadtrip.
Yes, you can take your own vehicle from India to Nepal for a self-drive roadtrip, provided the vehicle documents are complete and valid. You should carry the registration certificate, driving licence, insurance, pollution certificate, and authorisation letter if the vehicle is not in your name. Border and local vehicle permissions (Bhansar - Vehicle permit for NPR 800 per day) is required as per the current rules.
A well-maintained SUV or 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the Upper Mustang roadtrip because the route includes rough mountain roads, river crossings, broken patches, and high-altitude terrain. Vehicles with good ground clearance, strong tyres, reliable brakes, and proper service history are best suited for this expedition.
This roadtrip is best suited for travellers who have prior experience with long-distance driving or mountain driving. While beginners can join as passengers, self-driving to Upper Mustang requires confidence, patience, and the ability to handle challenging roads, altitude, changing weather, and remote conditions.
