Magical Spiti Valley Self Drive Expedition | FreeWheel Expeditions

⏱ 8 Nights / 9 Days 📍 Spiti Valley 🚙 Self Drive ⚡ Moderate COMING SOON
About This Expedition
Spiti Valley, nestled within the rugged embrace of Himachal Pradesh's northern terrain, is a captivating testament to the wonders of nature and human resilience. This high-altitude desert region, aptly named 'The Middle Land' in Tibetan, unfolds its mystique through a tapestry of barren mountains, ancient monasteries, and remote villages that cling to centuries-old traditions.
Buddhist monasteries perched upon cliffs like silent sentinels stand as symbols of spiritual devotion in this isolated realm. Spiti's cultural fabric woven with Tibetan influences reveals warm hospitality, simple living, and vibrant festivals that echo through its valleys.
This is not a road trip. This is an expedition through one of India's most dramatic high-altitude cold deserts where every kilometre demands respect and every viewpoint leaves you speechless.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Delhi to Narkanda (400 km / ~9 hrs)
Depart Delhi and climb steadily into the Himalayan foothills. Winding roads pass through Shimla before ascending to Narkanda at 9,000 feet, a quiet hill station known for apple orchards, dense cedar forests, and clear Himalayan skies. An easy acclimatization day before the altitude gains ahead.
Day 2
Narkanda to Raksham via Chitkul (220 km / ~7 hrs)
Drop into the Sutlej Valley and enter Kinnaur, a land of terraced orchards, Buddhist prayer flags, and ancient stone villages clinging to canyon walls. A short detour to Chitkul, the last inhabited village before the Indo-China border, is non-negotiable. Then onward to Raksham, surrounded by towering pines and rolling meadows.
Day 3
Raksham to Nako (140 km / ~4 hrs)
Ascend into increasingly stark, arid terrain as the landscape sheds its green and turns to raw rock and ochre. Cross into the rain shadow zone and arrive at Nako, a high-altitude village at 12,000 feet built around a still glacial lake, with a 10th-century monastery at its edge.
Day 4
Nako to Kaza via Gue Monastery (95 km / ~3 hrs)
A short but dense day. Stop at Gue Monastery to see the 500-year-old naturally mummified monk, one of the rarest preserved remains in the world. Continue through the Spiti River valley to Tabo, home to the UNESCO-listed Tabo Monastery, a living complex of cave shrines dating back over a millennium. Arrive Kaza by afternoon.
Day 5
Kaza: Chicham, Key Monastery, Kibber Village
Cross the Chicham Bridge, one of Asia's highest suspension bridges, with sheer gorge drops on either side. Climb to Key Monastery, a 1,000-year-old fortress monastery at 13,668 feet with commanding views of the Spiti Valley. End the day at Kibber, a high-altitude village that was once considered the world's highest motorable settlement. Evening back in Kaza.
Day 6
Kaza: Hikkim, Komic, Langza
Morning drive to Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office. Send a postcard from 14,400 feet. Continue to Komic, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages on earth, with a small monastery and near-total silence. Descend to Langza, known for its giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley and fossilized marine shells scattered across the hillside, remnants of the Tethys Sea.
Day 7
Kaza to Rekong Peo (210 km / ~7 hrs)
Retrace through Tabo and Nako, but the landscape feels different on the return. Peo sits at a lower altitude in the Sutlej Valley, warmer and greener. Check in early, it's a decompression day after the high-altitude stretch, and your body will appreciate it.
Day 8
Rekong Peo to Shimla (200 km / ~7 hrs)
The long descent back through Kinnaur, through Sangla, Rampur, and along the Sutlej. The road is carved into sheer cliff faces for long stretches; it demands attention but rewards with some of the most dramatic river canyon scenery in Himachal. Arrive Shimla by evening.
Day 9
Shimla to Delhi (350 km / ~8 hrs)
The final stretch, out of the mountains and back to the plains. Stop in Solan or Parwanoo if you need a break. The contrast between where you started and where you've been earns its own reflection time. Delhi by evening.
